Spencer Garcia, next door neighbour to Barry Humphries (also known as
Dame Edna Everage) and his wife, author Lizzie Spender, has come out on
top and succeeded in having his plans to convert his basement accepted
by Camden Council. According to the London Evening Standard, Mr
Humphries and his wife were both opposed to the idea of Mr Garcia
knocking down an extension and rebuilding it to incorporate an
additional basement storey. Speaking to the Camden New Journal, Mr
Garcia said: “Whilst we understand their disappointment we do believe
that all of the objections and the concerns raised by our neighbours
were dealt with and believe the Camden process to be fair. We’re
happy with the outcome, however we will stay true to our word and we
will be meeting with our neighbours in the new year to try and progress
in the best way possible and will try and alleviate all their
concerns. If you want to undertake a similar project and convert your
basement, be aware that you do have to seek planning permission from
your local council. Several councils in London have now put restrictions
in place for this kind of building work, which could impact on your
plans so it’s best to do your research first. If you’d like to find
out more about planning consents for basement conversions in London
boroughs, please get in touch with us here at The Oxford & London Basement Company.
We have a 100 per cent record for achieving basement consents across the
capital and can help you ensure you get the basement you want.
